I always wonder, what if Nissan offered both N/A and Twin Turbo for the new Z, satisfying both worlds. Supra had two motors to start but then cut their entry level option. Sport could have been N/A, Performance - TT. Nismo - TT with more power. Or make both engine options configurable in all trims?

It would have been 1 more nod to the Z31/Z32. Maybe further down the road the aftermarket will swap VQs into RZ34s. One can imagine.
I was SHOCKED when Nissan said that all Z trims would get 400hp. They had been offering a 4 banger, 300 hp VR and 400 hp VR in the Infiniti Q models. I was expecting Nissan to offer the low output VR on the Sport Z, but I'm grateful they didn't, now there's not much penalty for getting the lowest trim Z.

I think the VQ37 with the 9AT probably would've been surprisingly good.

Z34 is peak Z. Same performance as the new Nismo manual, no complex turbo systems, pulls hard to redline, naturally aspirated, lighter. Purist car. I wish they had kept the VQ37 and added the styling of the current car. That would be the best of all worlds, but if forced to pick, the 370Z due to the engine.

https://www.motortrend.com/cars/nissan/370z/2010
"With a 332-horsepower, 3.7-liter V-6 and nifty "SynchroRev Match" six-speed manual, the 370Z rips to 60 in just 4.7 seconds on its way to a quarter-mile of 13.3 at 105.7 mph. Braking from 60 to 0 takes only 106 feet and lateral acceleration comes in at a Rubber Cement score of 0.99 g."

Keep in mind this is on tires with 17 years less tech...

Compared to the new Nismo:

MotorTrend Test Results
0-60 MPH4.7 sec
QUARTER MILE13.2 sec @ 108.0 mph
BRAKING, 60-0 MPH107 ft
LATERAL ACCELERATION1.03 g
FIGURE-EIGHT LAP24.2 sec @ 0.81 g (avg)
They have small differences, but other than the engine they’re virtually the same car. The only critical spec where the Z34 NISMO tops the RZ34 NISMO is weight, where i think the Z is carrying something like 125 more lbs around.
The VR30 has 70 more HP (+20%) and more than more 100 lb-ft of torque (+40%). Z hits peak RPM faster and hits peak torque (40% more, I must add again) at 2,000 vs 7,500 for the VQ30.

BIG stretch to call the previous iteration of the same chassis “peak” with pretty much every metric not pointing in its direction.

I enjoy the in-cabin spool and blow noises, but to me the VQ has, by far, the better exhaust note.

I know what the dyno is saying and what is published and you're correct about it, but it just doesn't show up in the real world. For example, the 5-60 times for the VR30 cars are 5.3ish, and for the VQ37, 5.6ish. C&D numbers, manual 6 speeds. So all that hoopla about low end power delivery results in a rounding error pretty much in the real world, but what isnt a rounding error is 7500rpm engine that screams to redline. If you're going to be old, you gotta have style! And a wheezing TT engine that falls on its face 1500rpm before redline aint style. Since the performance is a rounding error, I'd much prefer a screaming NA motor that feels like it belongs in a sports car, vs what feels like a truck engine that people short shift for better acceleration, and since the chassis is the same, for me, 370 is peak.

Nissan is in trouble financially and has been for some time. Plopping the VR30 in literslly every vehicle they can is a cost saver. Hence why they equip all of them with the same anemic turbos for the 400hp models. An example of a company not doing this is Honda and the K series. They tailor it for each vehicle (CTR, RDX, Accord) its in via engine and turbo design alteration. As you noted, the Zs chassis isnt exactly one that loves abundant low end torque to deal with planting. They dont care about details though, just raid the parts bin and call it character. Total Chrysler move. I really love how the new Zs look, really really do. They even smell the same as the old Zs inside. Total heartstrings tug, but a complicated TT engine with no soul that isn't even faster notably than the amazing engine it replaced just feels bad.

The new Nismo dynos 390whp from the one dyno I saw by Z1?. It traps only 2-3mph higher than the 2009 which dynoes around 100 less. Same 0-60. This new engine just ain't it for me.

Having both RZ34 and 240Z, still sticking to my choice, the OG S30, USDM or JDM, especially the Series 1...

Agree with @trackratZ.
Based on performance and “where it fit in”(?) with the rest of the automotive world during its time, the S30 is the top of the Z Car mountain in my book.
