Maybe you've already thought of this, but if you have the switch in the parking light position (the two lights facing in opposite directions) and the handbrake is engaged only the running lights will be on, even in the dark. You could just put the handbrake on to the first click, where I'm pretty sure the brake is not actually yet engaged, should be good enough to get you through your security checkpoint at least.

You can't turn them off when it's dark, or can't turn them off at all, day or night?

If it's a dark-only thing, you could turn your phone flashlight on and sit it on the daylight sensor in the dash.

I'm not sure if that helps. And I'm not sure if that will even work. But that's sort of on par with what I do here.

I agree with @ThePoorZ. It's not a modification you made to the car. It's out of your control. Find that page in the manual and shove it up their a show it to them.
The flashlight idea is great! I think the daylight sensor is o

I think this is the route I am going to take going forward. Thanks for the suggestion.

I can confirm, on a US spec Z, that if you've got auto day/night on, putting your phone flashlight over the daylight sensor in the dash turns the headlights off. Took about 3-4 seconds. Then took about 3 to 4 seconds to turn back on after I removed it,
Just realized typing this I had it in park (car cranked) and I''m not sure if that makes a difference

Thats really good to know. Where is the daylight sensor on the dash? I was under the impression it was behind the rear view mirror until now.

Surprisingly difficult finding a picture to show the sensor.
Little round insert, top side of the dash, passenger end of the windshield defrost vent recess.

The amazingly crappy picture from the owner's manual doesn't help much.
