I was lucky enough to acquire a brand new Black Performance 6MT Z at MSRP! I've been calling dealerships and refreshing the nissan inventory page for almost 6 months now, and it finally paid off. I'm planning on babying it through the break-in period, but as soon as that's done I'm excited to try some pulls. I already love how it drives despite adhering to the strict 4k rev limit while breaking in. This car was DEFINITELY worth the wait.

With that said, here are a few things I've noticed - and how I plan to address them:
  • Audio quality isn't the best ever, but turning off the option that adjusts volume based on speed helped immensely for some reason. I plan on turning off ASC and ASE the next time I'm at the dealership and see if it helps as well.
  • There is definitely rev hang on this. It's impossible to shift both quickly and smoothly. You need to wait a beat before letting out the clutch each time you upshift, or live with a fairly hard jerk as the pressure plate grabs hold. On the flip-side, downshifting with the rev matching is fantastic. I've written about this rev hang issue before here: https://www.nissanzclub.com/forum/threads/nismo-flywheel-weight.1739/. My plan is to have my dealer order and replace the stock clutch/flywheel with the Nismo one. My G35 had this EXACT same problem, and the stock flywheel on that was nearly identical. Both are double-plated with springs-in-between monstrosities (in fact the Z's flywheel is even heavier).
  • Exhaust is way too quiet (as most have already noted). I'm getting the Fast Intentions exhaust (https://www.fastintentions.com/product/nissan-z-tdx-exhaust/) to replace the stock one. It's been ordered and I'm in the production queue. I'll install it myself.
  • The Bridgestone Potenza's SUCK. Even just light cornering and you can feel the traction loss. I don't even want to try doing pulls with them on. I live in the Northwest, so my tire of choice are Michelin Pilot Sport 4 All Seasons. They're ordered and I'll have them on by Monday.
  • I'm suspicious about possible oil blow-by since this engine is direct injection. Ordered a Mishimoto catch can and will install it myself once it arrives.
  • For front license plate (Washington state requires them), I'm going with the Mishimoto as well.
Super excited to get all of the above done! I'll try to post results as I have them. Other than the above, I'll address any other issues that come up, but the general plan is to leave it near-stock through the duration of my warranty. After that though? I'll mod and tune away. But that's for in the future.

Congrats on the beautiful new Z! Can't wait to see photos and read updates on your upgrades. I did the same, babied my Z until the required 1,200 miles, the hardest part is everyone in a sports car wants to race.

Welcome to the Z club. I've had mine a few months and already have over 3000 miles. Your ride looks fantastic. Enjoy!

So happy that we have another member with a Z! I understand your wanting to wait to tune after the warranty. But may I suggest the JB4 tuner from BurgerTuning! It piggybacks onto your existing computer, as it easily removes so that no one will know that it was ever there. It’s also adaptive, so when you make changes to your setup, it will alter the boost pressure automatically. I get really hard pulls using Map3. Check it out! 😊

Your tenacity paid off. Congratulations and thanks for the info on your impressions.

I turned off the ASC and ASE shortly after getting the car, and I wouldn't drive it any other way. I like hearing the car and the surroundings.

I did a several-hundred-mile road trip today, and I tried your suggestion to turn off speed sensitive volume. It was maxed, and now it's set to the minimum.

Wow! It does make a big difference. When driving before it often seemed too loud or two soft. Speed has something to do with how loud the car is, but 60mph on nice pavement is very different than 60mph on crap pavement. I found that I actually adjust the volume less now, and it does seem to sound better. 🤷 Thanks for the tip.
