Sequoia National Park

I am planning to go there for one day and staying in Visalia for one night Labor Day weekend. Been to many national parks but never been to Sequoia. Is the road friendly taking the Z or better off taking my SUV? All most parking spots are off to the side of the road (half dirt and half payment)?
