As weather warms up in ny I want to switch to using thicker oil. Is 5w-30 good enough or should I go for 5w-40. As of right now I’m using the oversized filter. Can I continue to use the same filter for thicker oil or is there a specific filter that accounts better flow of thicker oil.

Used the 9E01A on an Xterra w/ 5w-30 for a decade as it was the prescribed oil weight & p/n. Worked fine.
Informative 15m vid on the oil weight topic:

My take is that an oil filter is designed to capture particles down to a specific micron. A larger filter will be able to capture more contaminants before becoming plugged. You wouldn’t want a filter that allows larger contaminants through in order to flow thicker oil better. As long as you’re changing your oil and filter often, you should be fine.
