To avoid as much possibility of air bubble issues as possible, I did a few things when changing to my new Z1 unit.

First I used some good hose clamps, sealing the lines a couple inches out from the cooler. Then I removed everything possible before removing the hoses. Then I did a quick swap, catching all coolant, and dumping the oem cooler into the catch bucket. Installed the new exchanger, but before I loosened the clamps I took off the bleed screw. I filled the new exchanger with the old coolant plus a bit of new to make up the difference. Waited a few, topped off again, installed bleed screw. Removed clamps.

No drop in reservoir level. Will do a vacuum draw on it, but really don't expect any issues.

Awesome - plan on doing the same thing to prevent \ minimize air in hoses & intercoolers. I was thinking about using a plug but clamps looks like a good idea.

what are you using to pull a vacuum?
