He explained that the position of gas filler was set from the beginning, but they wanted to design the rear fender wide (which makes the filler buried deep inside the rear fender), therefor they had to make the filler cap big.
More "design" over "function" ... maybe Apple's ex-designer Johnny Ive was involved in the decision.

The sensible solution would have been to add an extension pipe.

If the filler is actually deep inside that rear wing, then it could be difficult to try and put petrol into the car, especially without continually scratching the paintwork.

The truth behind the HUGE filler cap: confirmed by Tamura and Irie (Nissan designer)

In the youtube video (around 8:35), Irie who is the designer of new Z described that the gas tank door become big due to the design of the rear fender. He explained that the position of gas filler was set from the beginning, but they wanted to design the rear fender wide (which makes the filler buried deep inside the rear fender), therefor they had to make the filler cap big.

I watched half way through the full part 3 video, Alphonso said they had a figure number for the life of time of the Z and it has already exceeded that number and it's only just begun to get in customer's hands.

A guy posted a pic of his hand over the cap so we can get a reference of how big it really is

I'm not sure what the big deal is. The old Z also had a big ass gas door.

370Z owner here, it's actually not big, pretty much average size. The new Z is definitely much larger.
