I have read the same which gave me pause before buying. My experience was the opposite. I gained performance w/ the open AMS (even w/ the sleeve inserted) vs the aftermarket boxed intakes, it's anecdotal but very real. This was in the Florida heat during summer. Noticed no difference in engine temps. Charge air temps may be different but not noticeable. Intercoolers would also help for sure. As they say your mileage may vary. Either way really can't go wrong. Boxed intake offers more choices and affordability.Cooler air is denser, denser air allows you to burn more fuel, and thus making more power. This is the same reason we have intercoolers, to cool down the charge air to near-ish ambient temp prior to entering the combustion chamber.
The inlets for the factory air boxes, and many of the aftermarket intakes, draw air from inside the bumper cavity rather than drawing from within the engine bay. Mishimoto is a great option with their convertible/hybrid approach, as is K&N with their boxes that seal up against the hood rather than being an entirely enclosed box (Nismo, AMS, Z1, as examples). AMS & B6A also offer completely exposed open air filters which will perform very well while on the dyno with the hood popped, but in real-world conditions will ingest hot air and stress the heat exchanger/intercoolers more than otherwise necessary decreasing their efficiency..
