At the end of the day, it is working as Trump planned since the beginning. Big corporations will start moving and start production in U.S. So all those US based companies who moved to Mexico and China for cheap labor, will now be moving back to US. It is a win in my book.
I think his opponents are more excited by tariffs than he is. They’ll wipe the tariffs and be heroes. Whatever. As America Turns.

Trump could run for a 3rd term, win, serve the four additional years and still be out of office before someone could spin up a brand new auto manufacturing plant in US. Nissan's lead time on a new model vehicle is ~4 years to build it at a plant that already exists. The idea that you can just flip the 25% tariff switch and immediately start producing vehicles in the US is naive. If we really want to bring manufacturing back to the US, an actual long term plan is necessary, with a clearly defined ramp up to penalties and tariffs. Anything else is short sighted political grandstanding.

The real joke is that it's all a moot point anyways. In 10 years 90% of automotive manufacturing jobs in the US will be performed by physical AI using robots from... you guessed it, China.

I work within the scope of the medical device industry and deal with a lot of very bright CEO's. Tariffs in the device industry have already started. In business deals, you find bargaining points in order to negotiate. This isn't about moving jobs back to the US or even about long term tariffs. These are just tools being used to negotiate a more even playing field on trade deficits, or something else. I haven't spoken with anyone that thinks tariffs are the long term goal or the end game.

This feels different because it's being played like a business negotiation, not like the normal political spin we always get from politicians trying to win their next election. We'll eventually likely know what the government is trying to get but a business person doesn't give away their plan during negotiations. Hang in there!

That's exactly what they are doing right now. They are investing billions into AI because China is way ahead of us when it comes to technology.
China is way ahead on the energy requirements required for AI. We need to invest HEAVILY and QUICKLY in energy or they're going to run our azzes over.

I could have sworn I had heard that while the Z is manufactured in Japan once they arrive in California Nissan is operating a small shop where a body panel or two is then added. This was done as a means of getting around the current low tariff. But I could be totally wrong.
Sounds silly… near completed Z car wouldn’t be sent to Australia, UAE, Mexico or Canada like that. So you’ve got the wrong info.

I’m pretty sure it’s on the Monroney Lable that final assembly is in California. Actually I just searched for a window sticker and I am correct. I knew I saw that when I purchased my Z!

I don’t want to speculate because I’m not absolutely certain but I have heard on good authority that Nissan has a small shop at the Los Angeles port were a bumper and spoiler (if optioned) is installed. Also, stickers. Whatever meets the minimum requirements to satisfy the law so that they can claim “final assembly” in the United States thus circumventing the previous tariff. From what I hear the new law won’t allow this as it closes the loophole that stated as long as the vehicle didn’t leave the port it hadn’t technically entered the country yet. The new law will require payment prior to offloading from the cargo ship.

Final Assembly just means the port in which is entered the country

For instance my 2024 said Brunswick GA and my 2023 said los Angeles

Final assembly means just that. Regardless of where the car comes into the country it has to have a part installed to be considered “final assembly”. My wife’s Mercedes-Benz engine was built in Poland and the SUV was built in Germany and there is no “Final Assembly” in America mentioned on the window sticker because the car came here fully assembled.

For the Z it's just small miscellaneous added accessories that are put on at the port (except for the heritage)

Correct. This was done to circumvent tariffs since the Z is now able to claim final assembly in America. Brilliant move on Nissan’s part but sadly that loophole is no longer going to be permissible. I’m sure all of the 25’s are currently stateside that are coming this year but I would be willing to wager if there is a 26 that comes to America it will no longer say final assembly was in the U.S.

A 2026? You are an optimist.

Wondering if I should pull the trigger on a complete LSD rear end before April 2nd....
