My car has 3400 miles and recently I can hear a creaking noise on the rear driver side. Braking does not affect the noise. It does not sound suspension issues. It is cyclic as the tire rotates I can hear the noise. I have not jack up the car and inspect the wheel bearing. The lug nuts are torqued properly. I will take it to the dealer next week. Any ideas? I have not had any car with a failed bearing with this low mileage.

I had a clicking noise coming from a wheel and it turned out to be a cracked wheel lock. I know it wasn't over torqued but it completely split and created a clicking noise when the wheel turned. My car had about 4k miles on it. Tech tried to tell me it was a center cap.

Was that lock on the OEM wheels of your Z?
Looks like the stud was too long for the lock, stressed and popped it apart.

Yes, this is the lock on the car when I bought it new this summer. If that was the case, then I would assume the others would ultimately fail. Seems like a lot of rust for a new car so I was thinking there might have been a crack in it already.

If you're running stock wheels you need to replace the locks as they're not the correct type. The OEM wheels need mag/shank lug nuts where this is an acorn/tuner style. With acorns on a mag/shank wheel you have less wheel stud engagement AND less contact surface. An acorn lug nut can also deform the lug holes on an allow mag/shank wheel if repeatedly tightened. You do have 4 other lug nuts holding the wheel securely, so it's not like you're going to have something horrible happen. But I'd swap them with mag/shank locks or lug nuts ASAP.

Top shows the correct mag/shank fitment on a wheel.
Bottom shows what an acorn style (cylindrical lock, in this case...easier to draw) looks like on a mag/shank wheel.

The stock lug nuts are acorn shaped however, they have a flat section with washer to stop the lug from being pulled farther in.

The dealer was able to take me in earlier. Update on the creaking sound coming off the driver side rear is due to a faulty wheel bearing. Dealer was surprised how prematurely it failed with only 3400 miles. Service advisor says that I might have hit a big pothole at one point. I dont recall hitting anything that bad to cause that issue. The wheel checked out straight. They dont have the hub assembly and will take a 2-3 days to get my car back.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

The OEM wheels have a conical seat at the very bottom, but I assume the lock doesn't fit in the bore to be able to touch the seat, so the conical portion of the lock is resting on the rim of the bore surface, not the conical part.

Maybe this is a better representation:

I've given up on wheel locks for this car, lost a locking lug at one point, bought a replacement set, and lost one from that set. I haven't heard of wheels getting stolen in a long time
