Nissan Exec Confirms the New Z and 370Z Share the Same Chassis Code

This ain't no Z35, even if Nissan surely made huge improvements to the new Z's aging Z34 underpinnings.

When the Nissan Z Proto made its debut, we couldn't help but notice a considerable amount of similarities between it and the outgoing 370Z. The cut lines, shut lines, and even air vents of these two cars matched up just a little too well, leading us to believe the Z Proto wasn't truly sitting on redesigned underpinnings. This ruffled more than a few feathers, but it turns out our hunch was right. We're not here to gloat, but an "I told you so" wouldn't be completely out of order.

Before the silk was pulled off of the 2023 Z, we asked a Nissan executive if the new twin-turbocharged sports coupe's chassis carries the Z35 chassis code. We were simply told "no." You read that right: by Nissan's own internal standards, the changes made to the latest Z are not significant enough to warrant a new chassis designation. The 2023 Z chassis is not internally known as the Z35, and it instead maintains the Z34 chassis code of the 370Z.

So that pretty much settles that. Yes, there will be significant changes to the new Z to make sure it is substantially different from the 370Z that came before it. The bodywork is obviously new, and so much of the interior has changed (and hopefully been improved) that the carryover chassis might not matter to the majority of consumers.

That said, much of the 2023 Z's body in white (all the bits you can't see) mirrors that of the 370Z's. We only hope Nissan's chassis gurus and engineers were able to extract all that they could from the Z34 chassis old bones to give the new Z a behind-the-wheel experience befitting of its engine's grunt.

Nissan has taken the covers off the Z Proto, a car that forecasts the successor to the 370Z. But as the covers were peeled back, there was no official reference to what underpins it.

In an interview with Australian media, Hiroshi Tamura, product specialist for the development of the Nissan GT-R and Nismo products, gave significant clues about the underpinnings.

Although stopping short of confirming full details of the next Z-car – expected to be called the 400Z – Tamura unveiled some key information.

While hesitant to talk about the eventual production version, Tamura focussed mainly on the Z Proto itself.

When quizzed about the platform that underpins the twin-turbo V6 prototype, Tamura suggested a “platform solution was still ongoing,” before elaborating further.

“We don’t have many platforms,” Tamura said, referring to Nissan’s global portfolio of products. “The Z platform is already existing, but we have to modify the existing platform.”

While Tamura didn’t expressly address which platform would underpin the next Z, given Nissan’s slim front engine, rear-wheel drive capable parts bin, there’s little chance of anything other than a version of the front-midship, or FM platform, being used.

That said, FM isn’t a static component set. As well as its use under the current 370Z, it also underpinned the 350Z which dates back to 2002.

Other Nissan and Infiniti vehicles with the same chassis hardware include the Infiniti Q50 sedan and Q60 coupe and their predecessors, the much larger Q70, the last Nissan Stagea wagon, and even the QX70 crossover.

Between them a variety of weights, powertrains, and ride heights go some to show what the chassis might be capable of.

Right now the naturally aspirated 245kW/363Nm 3.7-litre V6 engine in the 370Z is a long way off the most powerful application for the FM platform.

Nissan has confirmed the Z Proto is powered by a twin-turbo V6, but hasn’t released engine details. Given the Infiniti Q60 Red Sport (shown above) runs a 3.0-litre V6 rated to 298kW and 475Nm, it’s not hard to see how the current chassis might be adapted to cope.

“Power and torque is quite different, so the platform is modified,” Tamuara reassured. “It is not carry-over.”

As with the initial slow tease of Z Proto information, the 370Z’s replacement, whatever it might be called, is sure to receive a similarly long lead of product info.

Despite the production-ready looks of the Z Proto, some reports suggest a production version could arrive as late as 2023. With that long to wait you can be sure Nissan will have plenty of info to share between now and then to keep enthusiasts interested.

Yeah I don't think there's any doubt that this is a modified 370z. Hopefully it's tweaked in just the right way to improve the handling experience for this extra power output.

Sorry to bump such an old thread. He said “it is not carry-over”, but looking under the proto everything seems to be 370Z. Am I missing something?

No you're not. The general consensus has been that the Z is just 370z+; Tweaks here and there, but not a full redesign. We might all be wrong, and it could be a 90% new car, but from every spyshot, leak and proto details, its hard to distinguish the difference between old and new.

When the reveal comes in less than a week, this is the first area I'm after. We already know about the motor, interior, but nothing much on chassis and suspension in detail. I sure hope no CSC issues persist, come on it's been a few years on this problem.

It's been more than a few years. It's been going on since the HR 350z days. (2007-2008)
Ive been googling forums about the issue….I’ve seen lots of complaints up until the 2017 build and then it seems to have gone quite….has anyone on here have a later build? And if so do they still have issues??
