Don't get solid metal "Race" bushings unless...

I wanted to share my ill-informed experience with the "Race" bushing variant of the Z1 Rear Control arms (Toe, camber, and traction). After I had them installed, a friend of mine told me they won't last long, especially on the street. Since race or solid metal bushings aren't meant to handle the amount of bumps on the street, they will eventually wear out and start making these subtle metal clunking noises which mine did. I figured since I got thicker tires with more sidewall they would absorb most of the shocks but I was dead wrong. Luckily I was able to replace the metal bushings with poly bushings. Hopefully this helps anyone looking to get metal bushings.

Another note about the difference in professionalism and customer care between two companies:
Nowhere on the listing for the "Race" control arms on Z1's site does it say "NOT RECOMMENDED FOR STREET" as other products have this warning. Nothing was mentioned about the fact that the metal bushings won't last long on the street. I will inquire about warranty since I spoke to someone at Z1 and he told me that they should last around 2 years, but 2 years of street or collective track time?

Tirerack.com on the other hand, called me when I ordered non-standard tires for my Z and asked "are you sure you want these tires?" I thought that was pretty cool of them to do.

Another note about the poly bushings. They have the grease fittings. On the toe arm bushings, the fitting is angled in a way that makes it impossible to get the grease gun hose onto it. The fitting should have been 90 degrees relative to the arm itself. Maybe there are hose adapters or hoses that have 90 degree plugs? Idk. Either way, sometimes engineers forget that there is a world outside of their own, and that can be frustrating.

The lesson here is don't get solid metal bushings for suspension parts unless they're getting installed on a dedicated track car, since the track doesn't have millions of bumps like the street.

cheers.

There are a couple of different styles of 90 degree fittings. These work well for really tight places. This year I upgraded to an electric gun and it’s a game changer for greasing multiple fittings.

Which electric grease gun did you get?
Side note/concern: When I was filling one of the bushings, I kept filling waiting to see the grease leak out, but instead the bushing expanded so I had to let some out for the bushing to contract. Idk if that is normal but worried me a bit.

I have a ryobi one, just because I’m in their ecosystem. All of the major tool manufacturers have something similar though. Get a 90 degree fitting and a longer hose and it makes quick work of the tediousness of greasing bushings. I typically have to grease my trucks suspension once a year, and that’s with daily driving it.

Ordered the right angle fitting. I'm in the Milwaukee ecosystem. I saw one at Home Depot that is free if I buy some other tool. Good thing I need a right angle torque wrench.

Yeah, if they made a 12 volt version I’d have bought that in a heartbeat. Their 12 volt tools are amazing

thanks for the headsup, are you talking about the rear monoball bushing set? maybe it's a low quality product because some OEM uses spherical bushing with rubber boot and they last quite long time

Z1 customer service is pretty bad, they have lot of items but i have feeling unless your a you tuber or someone known they will treat you like trash, i tried to ask them some questions and did not get much of answer for the upper front forged control arms. as i told them car will be a street car and they said i like the race ones? if they start to wear out i will throw them in the bin and save other people the pain. also will not be ordering anything from them going forward as i live in Australia and when you checkout they charge custom fees etc however they don't pass them on to fedex or Australian government and try to keep to money... they make you spend hours on emails and they keep saying we need proof of the payment of taxes and fees... then the claim they cannot open PDF, attached emails or see jpgs. you call them and there is not one manager working. Also they stuffed my shipping up and custom fees and had to deal with fedex direct and pick up one or parcels from airport. Get razzed up when i see someone getting Z1'd and i have a bit of a rant.

The Z1 race bushings are booted but the metal spherical bushings are just inherently not made for constant bumps from street roads. It just bothers me that Z1 doesn't make that clear for people like me that didn't know better. Their attitude towards their customers is "oh isn't everyone a seasoned race car driver mechanic?"
