In another thread I posted that my awe track exhaust unfortunately hit a manhole on a construction road and the resonator is fucked. I misjudged the height of the manhole 😢 lesson learned. Had to remove it as it was being dragged on the street.

That being said I’ve been looking at other potentially new catbacks and the Tomei single exit paired with the ISR y pipe caught my attention. The big burnt exhaust tip and aggressive sound due to higher pipe and titanium is calling my name.

Wanted to see if someone out there has this setup or even with the tomei Y pipe but I’d want to save few hundred bucks if I can and get the ISR Y pipe instead.

As mentioned in the other thread I’m looking for a more aggressive profile than my awe track. Will be pairing a lower downpipe in the future but for right now looking for a potential replacement without breaking my wallet.

AWE track served me well, sounded good, and was a reasonable price. Don’t drive your Z on a construction road fellas šŸ˜ž

This youtuber is a forum member and made a great install video for the US "Tomei" single exit:

Keep in mind that USA Tomei is NOT the same company as Tomei Japan. USA Tomei basically stole the name to sell cheaper made in taiwan/china parts in a messy scheme (they were an authorized subsidiary back before 2019, then stole the name and trademark in the US and went rogue; now Tomei japan wants nothing to do with them) you can read about online. The USA tomei exhaust is sold under "RSE" in japan. Real Tomei (Japan) doesn't sell a single exit for the Z, only dual: Ti RACING TITANIUM MUFFLER for RZ34/400Z ļ¼ TOMEI POWERED INC. ONLINE CATALOGUE

yes I did hear about that but they say should be carefully considered when buying engine parts and exhausts should be carefully lay with either brand

Yeah, engine parts I would 100% only get Tomei Japan.

Exhaust's... titanium is pretty crack prone no matter who sells it (even the OEM GT3 Porsche titanium mufflers crack all the time) so maybe it's fine.

I just don't like the principle of it. Tomei USA is full on larping as a reputable Japanese company while selling cheap Taiwan parts. All their manuals are in both Japanese and English still to keep up the facade even though it's 100% USA/Taiwan.

These guys compared Tomei USA and Tomei Japan and they were absolutely identical. I’m sure the Tomei engine parts such as cams are much better from Japan, but the exhausts are identical. Probably come from the same manufacturer to be that identical down to the welds.

Highly recommend the Tomei, I have it on my Z and it’s been amazing. Great quality, sound is amazing, sounds very refined (I do have a stock Y-Pipe though) and looks sick.

How’s the fitment of it? It looks quite low to the ground. I’m running lowering springs so it might not have much clearance

I mean you can see in that video they are not identical, the welds near the muffler where it meets the tubing, tomei japan has 3 welds there because it looks like they added an extra sleeve (doubler like on aircraft) to prevent cracking, the tomei usa knockoff only has one weld because they omitted the sleeve.

Yes the robotic welds on the pie cuts are of similar quality, but so what? robots are precise.

The tubing also looks to possibly be from different sources from the surface finish differences:

1793213035110-tc.webp

Hangers also look to be of possibly different diameters (hard to tell visually) and definitely different finishes:

1793213451044-gn.webp

They also don't compare ANYTHING substantial in the video and completely miss the doubler at the muffler weld ( I think mechanic dude might start to point it at ~4:21 out but the invested knock-off dude cuts him off with "that's just because you got a longer one",.. which is complete BS).

This video is just a couple of uneducated guys looking at it and going "yup looks the same to me" Something as simple using calipers to verify the claimed tubing thicknesses would have been nice, because of course a knock off looks similar, that's the entire point.

Additionally, this doesn't even matter for our platform, because Tomei Japen DOESN'T EVEN SELL the systems Tomei USA does for the RZ34. They are sold in japan under RSE (which is TOMEI USA because they can't call themselves Tomei in japan obviously) which sells taiwan/chinese parts in japan.

Tomei Japan's only RZ34 offering (compeltely different):

1793214746326-d5.webp

To be clear, I am not claiming that the Tomei USA exhaust is bad in any way, I have no firsthand experience besides that titanium exhausts are crack prone no matter who makes them. I AM claiming that Tomei USA and Tomei Japan are two completely different companies with completely separate supply chains and product offerings (besides the blatant copies). One is made in Japan, one is made in China/Taiwan.

Morally though, I personally choose not to support a business that stole a reputable Japanese company's good name and reputation through shady business practices in order use that Japanese name and reputation to sell Chinese parts at inflated prices just to make more money. They even stole the slogan "the engine specialists" when they haven't developed ANYTHING. It should be "The Chinese copy drop shipping specialists"

Brother they are the same thing. Saying that ā€œthe titanium looks to be from different sources due to the shadeā€ sounds crazy lol. The hangers are the same length which is evident if you have the gift of vision. Once again I do not doubt that the Japanese one is better, but they are near identical. The TomeiJapan RZ34 one is absolutely hideous especially at the steep price tag, they somehow got outdone by TomeiUSA for our own platform. Almost everything you use is Chinese so the whole ā€œI wont support Chinese productsā€ is nonsense.

Once again I do not doubt the Japan one is better in terms of quality, but the video shows how identical they are, but their offering of the hideous contraption for our RZ34 they built for almost $4k is appalling and is overpriced for what’s not even a true dual but rather a single tube diving into two openings.

Fitment is great!, I centered it properly after this pic but yes the midpipe hangs lower than stock. Saw that across different platforms when I was watching videos. Don’t think I’d recommend one if you’re lowered.

You ignored my main point that clearly in the videos the Japanese version has a sleeve/doubler welded in front of the muffler to prevent cracking there and the Chinese one does not. saying "Brother they are the same thing" in light of that fact "sounds crazy lol" to use your words.

Also I said the hangers are POSSIBLY different DIAMETERS, not length. I.E one looks fatter. I never said anything about "length". I wish the video had taken any kind of measurements on anything at all to support their point. I agree the surface finish is just a possibility, but they are clearly NOT exactly the same thing.

Again, you're responding as if I'm attacking you and your exhaust personally. I am not. It's most likely a fine exhaust and your subjective opinion that the real Tomei is "hideous" is absolutely fine too, I also like the routing of the RSE/Tomei USA better (neither of which is "true dual" btw). You can also do whatever you want with your own money; If you like the look and price point of the RSE/Tomei USA and don't care they stole real Tomei's name, by all means buy it, but to represent them as "lol the same bro" is simply not true, and I'd like people to be informed before they give their hard-earned cash over to a shady company that is larping as a respected Japanese brand.

My apologies I did not address the welds in that specific video. Here are some pics attached of my Tomei USA muffler welds vs a picture of a muffler on Tomei Japan’s own website. It’s the same thing, with small variances across different platforms.
Look I completely agree that anything made in Japan is simply better, hence why I bought my RZ34 and if Tomei JP made a proper single-exit like USA then I’d buy that too, but they dont. And as evidenced by the photos, they are near identical and Tomei JP doesn’t even state that their exhausts are all built in continental Japan. Attached is a image from MartiniWorks where they state Tomei JP also manufactures in China. Now you may have better sources, but when I was shopping I could not find anything that said every Tomei JP exhaust was guaranteed built in Japan. So no, Tomei JP isnt the end-all be-all you make it seem like. I considered a number of options and I simply liked the Tomei USA one best and have been loving how refined it sounds.

Thank you for the information that Tomei Japan does make exhausts in china, I was not aware of that.

Your photo is showing the tip side weld of the Tomei Japan muffler(no stress) and the tube side weld on the Toemi USA(stress). Look where the muffler bluing is.

You can clearly see in this photo from your own video that Tomei Japan uses a doubler at the Muffler to pipe reinforce that area:
1793307464942-j3.webp

It may not be the case for every product, but for the product in the video you listed has a clear difference.

You can see it clearly in other tomei japan products:
1793308057310-4r.webp

All kinds of other specifications beyond what you can see could also be different and effect longevity, like the muffler end cap thicknesses(another common crack area). Type of TI used etc. It's almost a given any Ti exhaust will crack eventually regardless of quality, but you can buy some time with good design.

Again, my only real point is they are clearly not the same based on the video you posted, and to know the company you're actually buying from.

My Tomei single exit has been holding up fine. I had to drop the exhaust a couple days ago for a sway bar install, so I was under the car and had a good chance to see how it looked. There's a few deep scrapes where the exhaust hit the ground (speedbump, etc., but there is no evidence of weld failure, metal failure [titanium is a strong metal] and there are no structural changes or deformities to any of the pipes. The exhaust hangars and clamps are also performing admirably with no leaks or sagging.

I cannot speak for Tomei USA being manufactured in China or elsewhere or their quality compared to Tomei JP, but I the one I purchased has proven to be a quality piece. I will also add that there is a low point where the exhaust goes under the rear axle, but it hasn't proven to be an issue at stock ride height. It might be a point of concern if the car was lowered.

The exhaust sound has also improved as the system ages. It's a bit louder (not by much) and the tone is a little deeper. I still feel it's the best exhaust sound for a Nissan if you're chasing that classic JDM tone.

Appreciate the vid quote too. :)
