As the title says, it sounds like the parking pawl in my 9AT is "popping" on the first start of the day as I leave the garage. Car is parked level in the garage, no e-brake. When I select reverse, the car sometimes doesn't even start backing on its own. If I give it some gas, it makes a pretty loud pop as it starts moving (guessing parking pawl) then it's good to go and won't do it again.

Likely going to need to go to the dealership for some type of calibration service I'm guessing. Anyone else with any thoughts or experience with this?

does it do it after it rains or you wash the car? if so that pop is your pads rusting to the rotor. very common with the high metal content of these pads. if you can pinpoint it to the rotors being wet the drive before especially if it sits overnight thats 100% it. this has happened to my NISMO twice but used to happen to my GTR all the time because the iron content is so high in the pads. one time it even ripped a chunk of the pad out when it broke free

on my NISMO when I crank it and have the foot on the brake in the garage I hear a loud "thunk" sound as its I shift to reverse sometimes from the transmission. its always done that sometimes more sometimes less but that doesnt seem like what you are talking about,

It could be. This last time it occurred after I washed the car and put it back up for a couple days. It made the above issue after. So yeah, it very well could be that. I'll make a mental note and see if it happens any time this week when it's dry. Thanks for the info!

yeah this is 100% it. ive had a lot of experience with it..

best way to mitigate this is take it for a drive around the block after washing and best yet let it sit in the garage for a while or wherever then a few hours later get in it and move it forward or back a few few so the pads dont stick to the initial spot that had the dampness.

the nismo Z uses a different front pad than the performance and it has a lot more metal content ( thus the extra dust) this is why it happens more commonly in the NISMO.

the GTR is even worse with the bigger brakes. sometimes when those seize up from the overnight rust you have to rev the engine a bit in reverse to get it to free them and it feels like you are breaking something when it pops loose.

I worked in aerospace, and we had a process we used to prevent brake pad seizure on aircraft/drones etc. I'm remiss to say what that process is, as I don't want people trying it in the off-chance it causes friction issues during braking. I may give it a shot (it's a cheap inexpensive graphite spray coating applied to the rotor) to see if it works on a vehicle. The intended use for that is on things like aircraft that may stand for days/weeks/months between uses. I'm unsure of the longevity of the treatment and if it causes any serious safety issues on a car.

I know on aircraft, the forces on the brakes are much stronger and any lubricant on the rotor is burned off in about a half second once the plane's brakes are engaged at touchdown.
