I agree with @jdm-rhd - get it repaired (even if out of pocket), you'll spend < $100 to stop it from spreading instead of waiting until you have to replace the windshield for $1k+.

Sounds like you need more free time! :) Ours is a weekend vehicle but I manufacture excuses to drive it. Currently in the midst of a road trip which will add 2k+ to the ODO. Side benefit is getting off the beaten path and finding roads that allow the car to show what it is built to do. Great fun.

@yellowz6mt is right. The non-California emissions issue was resolved a couple decades ago. I currently own two vehicles in CA that were purchased in neighboring states and had no issues with CA smog or registration.
