I called the sales manager at the dealer I selected for my reservation and everything is copasetic, I am in their system and will get notified of any developments like when official pricing is released. I made him aware of the non-functioning Nissan Canada reservations email account.

Couple of interesting points others might like to know:

  • he said it takes two months from the time the car is manufactured to get it here
  • he thinks we will be able to select items from the as-yet unannounced factory-installed accessories in time, he said these items are never listed in the initial spec release, always come out closer to production
  • he doesn't think that the 9" screen with nav is likely to be on that list of accessories :(
  • however some current Nissans do show some sort of nav display on their main digital-display IP from Android Auto/Carplay connected phones (Nissan is moving away from built-in nav according to him) and he thinks that will be the case with the Z
  • If you subscribe to the car's wifi-hotspot service after the free trial runs out you won't need to use data on your phone for real-time traffic etc.

Update: I just got a request for a "copy" of your driver's license - " To complete your order we will require a copy of your drivers license to prepare a provisional Bill of Sale which will be forwarded to Nissan Canada. A copy of the Bill of Sale will be provided to you as well for your records. "
I wonder if doing this then permanently ties your sale to that dealer. There is a dealer change form online on the reservation site but I'd like to know that will still work even after the provisional bill of sale is completed. How to find out..... UPDATE: not needed, see post below
Was asked for my DL at my Vancouver dealer too.

Honestly , I agree. I’m from Canada and it’s a show. Starting to think they’re testing this with Canada and Australia first to see how to fix all the clinks.
Nissan knows you Canucks are too polite to get upset while they work out the bugs in the ordering process. ?

Well the bill does say it can be cancelled and the deposit is fully refundable. I have to return it in 48 hours to maintain my reservation.

When did you do the preorder? February 3rd? Or the limited week special days of January 26-February 2?

OK here is the latest in this hilarious saga. After telling me that my driver's license was needed, and then untelling me that, the dealer sent me a provisional contract to sign. As I was monkeying around in Adobe Reader to sign it I got an email from Nissan Canada saying my order had been confirmed. So I emailed my dealer, "Do you still need the signed contract?" Turns out they don't.

Then to top it off the confirmation letter I just got says an order number will be assigned when the vehicle is close to production - but I already have an order number in my original "reservation made" email. So another query sent about that. Quite the s$%^show.

UPDATE: got a reply. It turns out there are 2 different order numbers, one for the reservation system and another for actual production: "The first refers to the registration on the portal, counting how many people placed an order and who ordered first. The one you will receive later will refer to the actual vehicle that will be built and will allow us to follow its process from build through shipping and finally delivery to the retailer."

Just got that in the last hour, it's triggered by the dealer sending something to Nissan Canada I think, but frankly as it's Nissan Canada we're talking about here who the eff knows? ?

What in the ever-loving heck is going on up there?!

I don't understand why they wouldn't use one order number—that's just introducing another variable into the equation and will surely cause even more complications for others.

Considering how many other preorders have taken place in the auto industry over the last few years, you'd think manufacturers would learn what not to do. Clearly not...

It's not the dealer making the sale though unless you give him the car to sell, so if he doesn't play ball he loses the fat MSRP profit margin on one of Nissan's most expensive cars. Seems to me that is motive, shaving a grand off a $10k profit is better than $0 profit - plus he'll likely get your service business, more $ in the till.
But the dealer is still getting the car, and the money is going to the dealership first unlike in your case where it goes straight to Nissan Canada
They still have the oppertunity to upsell you stuff and that’s why it goes through the dealer….i guarantee no dealer is going to be doing discounts on this car. If Canada has already sold their performance models and they know there are people who missed out …..in what world will they be doing deals that benefit the seller….just be happy we don’t have the dealer mark up that the US gets otherwise you would be paying more for the car alone…never mind discounted extras

Interesting…that you didn’t need it after all. I needed to provide my for Australian sales…but it still doesn’t tie me to the contract

The dealer only gets the car if you choose, you can move it to any dealer you want, that's what gives you leverage. Not a difficult concept, they lose a sale if you move it, regardless of what overall demand is.
