Dang.... crazy news. I wonder how they got there. I can't imagine kids that are eager to learn math and reading would just turned like that. Perhaps there's something going on in the home from their raising....
This is crazy….we have never and I hope we never see anything like this in Aus. Someone was saying on a craft forum the other day you guys have to have clear backpacks because it’s cheaper than metal detectors for school?
This to me is just so very sad, we really are very sheltered here

Don't you guys have the police check in on you constantly if you are under quarantine?

Aren't y'all not allowed to go anywhere?

The clear backpacks are in very few schools. We have social problems here that are way too deep to fix with banning something.

I’m not against anything…my point was it’s sad that children are even thinking about this.
At my age I was still playing with my Barbie dolls

There are several questions in that 1 question, and it it affected some high school (9-12 grade) in America. The funding vs safety policy is often negotiated not for best outcome, but for what is the most feasible because it's partly political. I don't know how they arrived at the clear backpack vs detector; perhaps the rule/policy transfer the responsibility from school to parents/kids. If the school have detectors, then they have to employ more people. So I don't believe just the money, but also it's the delineation of responsibilities.

I live in Houston (suburb area) and 1 high school I know have clear backpack policy, but not for K-8 grades. In the same state of Texas, a suburb school district outside of Austin do not have this clear backpack policy.

This seems to be in the news non-stop.

I think one of the reason why this story (vs other kidnap stories) got traction is because of the viral YT videos of the traffic stop. It created a story like right out of a hollywood movie that we can relate to. Every exec at every broadcast stations knew there's money in it so they invested in the coverage knowing there's big advertisement money for it.

If the 45th had his 2nd term, we probably don't see this story bc he's more interesting .... lol

That's crazy and sad. Kids were safer when they had to do virtual learning. Sadly I don't think this will be the last story like this.
Are you talking about physically or emotionally?

Generally, I think the outcome of the kids life/education/habit/responsibilities is at least 80% based on parental teaching, not school. The K-12 teaches us primarily to compete for the material resources, but the school always depend on the parents to teaching the kids cooperation and relationship matters. When the kids are bad, they get punished and asked parents to take care of them (i.e. suspensions). What you you think, is it MORE of "story like this" bc primarily of parents or the society/school?

BTW, how many kids do you have?

I know that clear pack backs have been a thing for a while but I also think part of the problem with depending on metal detection is that it doesn't pick up 3D printed guns which is a whole other issue.

Not longhorn….but wanted to weigh in.
Year 12 in Australia is hardcore, your grade depends on which university you get into ( have no idea how the US system has works)
My son had just started year 12 when COVID hit, and let me tell you it was hard. Not just in terms of schooling but also having the ability to let off steam and go play sport with his mates.
But in terms of learning ….well there is no way in hell I could help him with most of his subjects. Maths specialist I couldn’t even understand the question never mind figure out what step to take first, physics and chemistry were not much better . It’s all the formulas and correct applications and which way to write them. Makes my head hurt just thinking about it . History he wasn’t as affected…easy to read and learn about, as was english literature.
In Aus we were totally unprepared had no online learning ready to go, and the richer schools with better set ups did better than those with poor
In WA we were lucky only had about 3/4 weeks out of school but even that did impact on not just his but most of the kids grades at his school.
My heart goes out to those going through it in Vic and NSW, sometimes you really need a teacher

In this case, online learning equals bad
But resilience training equals good.

I like to think they kind of level each other out a little

I dated girls like her when I was younger. The stories of her mental condition brought back some PTSD for me. Out of control pretty girl. Although a pretty Asian girl who is mental is no better!

I also think this is a great way for media to divert attention from their preferred political party's incompetence. Convenient distraction from the COVID-19 response, Afghanistan debacle.

He seems the type to kill himself instead of paying for his crimes, so doubt he will be found alive.
Yeah he definitely seems the coward type so he will kill himself rather than go to prison. The fact they haven't found him yet just makes me think he has already done it.
