The MK5 Supra has already surpassed the MK4 within the first 4 years of sales.

Toyota did its homework on market research. Its quickly becoming its own legend.

MK5 Sales per Year
- 2019 = 2,884
- 2020 = 5,887
- 2021 = 6,830
- 2022 = 2,121
Year to date total = 17,728

MK4 1993-1998 Sales Total = 11,239

This is exactly why it's always funny to me when people say "the MKV is a failure" and " nobody is buying that trash". The MKIV was the real failure by that metric then. It was good car, but it had nothing special about it and nobody cared for it until it was discontinued, just like every enthusiasts product.

During 93-98 there were more choices for JDM cars. The MK4 Supra had to compete with the likes of the RX7, 3000GT, 300ZX, GTR, NSX, etc.. Pretty much every JDM manufacturer at the time had something to offer. Today if you want something a tier higher from a Miata or BRZ/86.. your only choice is the Supra.

The problem with the Mk IV is that it was rather boring-looking after the great looking Mk III with pop-up lights. The problem with the Mk V is that it is just hideously ugly (and didn't have a manual gearstick). :)

What happens often is that as the prices come down for second-hand ones, the young boy racer brigade can get their hands on them, and they then become popular.

It actually was... even their own forum insider said Toyota was hoping to sell 12k units a year for North America. And when that didnt happen they brought in the afterthought 4 banger with hopes of making up the differences but it turned out to be even a bigger sales flop and Toyota had to reduce the production numbers for 2022 because of how bad it was doing.

Maybe nothing special in today's terms, but at the time the A80 held its own against cars that were 2 and 3 times its price.
To be fair, the cars that are 2-3x the price range are mainly the "budget" Ferraris, Aston Martins, 911s (but I always leave 911s in their own class -- its hard to compare straight line speed metrics for a car that is built to corner like nothing else), etc. And the quality of car that Europe was producing in the 90s was nowhere near what it pushes out at the $150k range today.

Guess we're just ignoring COVID shutdowns and the Ukraine war ramifications?

In all seriousness, you know it went on sale before both of those events? Basic math to hit 12k units a year means that you have to sell 1k each month. Toyota never even came close to that figure in the months prior to the Wuhan virus hitting, and the only time they did hit 1k a month was May of 2021.

Like how you guys ignored the rising Yen & the 90's bubble burst which caused inflation. All the Japanese sports cars were affected, not just the A80.
