Mitsubishi’s Ralliart Concept Is Either Awesome or a Crossover With a Diffuser
https://www.roadandtrack.com/news/a38568543/mitsubishis-ralliart-concept/Could this be Mitsubishi's first car with any sort of performance aspirations since the Evo X?
Until 2010, Ralliart was both Mitsubishi's championship-winning world rally team and its high-performance division. Both were phased out for more than a decade before the automaker announced an eventual revival in May. Now we have our first indications of what a future for Ralliart could actually involve.
This is the first teaser of what Mitsubishi is calling a Ralliart concept car. It will debut at the Tokyo Auto Salon alongside a production-ready electric kei car concept in mid-January, but the Ralliart concept is meant to "[express] the company's vision for the new Ralliart." In theory, that could be anything from a pie-in-the-sky concept of an outlandish sports car to define the future of Mitsubishi to an Eclipse Cross with some aftermarket aero pieces.
The teaser photo shows a diffuser integrated directly into the rear bumper of a car, truck, or SUV of some sort. It gives very little to go on, but Mitsubishi's current product line leaves very little room for a serious performance variant. In the U.S, Mitsubishi sells only the Outlander, the Eclipse Cross, and the ultra-light Mirage. The Japanese line is larger, but it still does not include another sedan or performance-ready hatchback. That leaves only a wholly new concept for a Ralliart halo program or a simple look at a lightly modified existing Mitsubishi.
Could this be the first step toward the impossible dream of a GR Yaris-fighting Mirage G4 Evo? Probably not, but it might be something worth seeing.
